Job Description
ARCO Group Ltd is looking for an experienced finance leader to join a well-established, family-owned construction business with a strong reputation across New Zealand. Unleash your potential with several entities under the Group's umbrella—spanning construction and property—this role offers the chance to make a real impact across a diverse and growing portfolio.
The Opportunity
As CFO, you'll be right at the centre of the action, working closely with the executive team and lending your expertise across financial, legal, tax, and day-to-day operational matters.
The role is ideally based in Whangarei, though we also welcome candidates from Auckland who are able to travel weekly to meet with the leadership team in Northland.
This is a hands-on leadership role where your practical know-how and strategic thinking will help guide ARCO through its next phase of growth, while keeping financial systems sharp, reliable, and ready for what's ahead.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership
- Lead and mentor the finance and accounting team.
- Provide strategic financial advice to the executive team and present new financial strategies to support long-term growth.
- Produce accurate and timely financial reports, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets.
- Oversee monthly management reporting, project cost analysis, financial forecasting, and budget allocation.
- Manage cash flow daily, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll processing.
- Review and approve business cases across the Group.
Legal & Compliance
- Manage property agreements and oversee legal matters, engaging with external lawyers where required.
- Conduct contract reviews to protect ARCO's interests across supplier, tender, and customer relationships.
Tax & Regulatory Obligations
- Oversee GST returns and ensure compliance with all tax requirements.
- Maintain rigorous standards across all regulatory and reporting obligations.
Operational Efficiency
- Champion the implementation of lean systems to improve financial and operational processes.
- Lead insurance management, ensuring all assets and activities are protected appropriately.
About You
We're looking for a hands-on, forward-thinking CFO who's confident leading in a dynamic, fast-moving environment. You'll bring a strong mix of practical experience, strategic insight, and people-focused leadership. Ideally, you'll offer:
- Solid leadership experience in senior finance roles.
- A proactive approach and a history of improving financial systems, processes, and controls.
- Great communication and organisational skills, along with the ability to mentor and support a dedicated team.
- Strong governance experience, including board engagement and stakeholder management.
- A deep understanding of legal and tax obligations to ensure the business stays fully compliant.
- Proven capability across budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- CA or CPA Qualification
- Experience in construction or other project-based industries (a bonus).
- Exposure to property transactions such as purchase and sale agreements (also a plus).
Why ARCO Group?
You'll be joining a highly respected construction organisation with a strong legacy and a clear commitment to quality, innovation, and integrity. This is a genuine opportunity to influence financial performance at a group level, contribute to strategic decision-making, and support a team that is proud of the work they deliver.
If you're motivated by meaningful impact and ready to take the next step in your career, we welcome your application and look forward to discussing the role further.
